Christmas holidays in FutureLand
Sparkling boat trips!
During the Christmas holidays, FutureLand is immersed in Christmas atmosphere. Come by for a romantic lights tour with the FutureLand Ferry, put on VR glasses in the interactive information centre or let the children discover everything about the most modern port in the world during fun workshops or the kids quiz. A fossil expedition on Boxing Day with the whole family is also a great option!
December & Januar
During the short winter days, you can enjoy special boat trips in the dark along the modern terminals of Maasvlakte 2. Thanks to the sparkling lighting, it’s not without reason that the port of Rotterdam is known as the biggest Christmas tree in the Netherlands! Admire the exciting game of dark and light and marvel at the countless lights on board the FutureLand Ferry. While you are enjoying the trip, an expert guide will tell in Dutch interesting facts about what you are seeing, or what may be obscured by the darkness. An audio tour is available.
In the period from 9 December to 6 January, the FutureLand Ferry will untie the ropes at 5.00 pm for a sparkling lights tour. The boat trip takes about an hour and a half. During the trip, you can enjoy a delicious meal, provided by our New Fork restaurant. Book the lights tour online.
With the port as an endless source of inspiration, children can work with different materials to create a beautiful diorama in the shape of a container. The workshop costs € 2.00 per workshop. Equipment and supervision in Dutch by art teacher Joanna Smolarz are included. You can join in the workshops at any time, there is no need to book.
Children and their parents/guardians can take part in a fun, active presentation with an amusing film and exciting quiz, all in Dutch. Afterwards, the children and parents can get started on a treasure hunt to discover FutureLand. The treasure hunt has two difficulty levels: one for children aged between 6 and 9 years and one for children aged 10 and up. It’s free to join the kids’ tour and there is no need to book.
An expedition led in Dutch by experienced fossil explorer Walter Langendoen will be organised on 16, 26 and 30 December as well as on 6 January. On the Maasvlakte beach, Walter will provide an explanation in Dutch on searching for archaeological and palaeontological treasures. His collection of thousands of finds now comprises fossilised hyena droppings, mammoth bones, vole teeth and much more.
The beach expeditions take about 135 minutes. More information and bookings.
Nieuwe Waterweg exhibition
From deep to deeper
The official go-ahead for the deepening of the Nieuwe Waterweg and the Botlek was given in March 2018. Rijkswaterstaat and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have joined forces to ensure that sea-going vessels with a draught of 15 metres can also reach the Botlek port. This means that 50% more cargo can be transported, which is good for Rotterdam’s competitive position. The project comprises the deepening of the Botlek and - over a distance of 25 kilometres - the deepening of the Nieuwe Waterweg, the Scheur and the Nieuwe Maas.
Visitors to FutureLand will learn all about this extensive project in the temporary ‘From deep to deeper’ exhibition. In the heart of the port, they will experience first-hand what is involved when 5 million cubic metres of dredged material is released at the large-scale deepening. Make sure you don’t get your wet feet!
Travel through 100 years of port development
Every Sunday (including during the Christmas holidays on 23 and 30 December), a luxury coach departs from the bus platform at Rotterdam CS and Willemsplein at the base of the Erasmusbrug straight through the port to FutureLand information centre. En route, the port comes to life and you see the port areas with various forms of industry. In the heart of the development of the newest port area, this interactive information centre offers views across the most modern container terminals in operation. From FutureLand, you can take an extensive one-and-a-half-hour boat trip. On board, an expert guide will extensively tell you everything about the world’s most modern port. An audio tour is available.
